The Making of a Sailor/or Sea Life Aboard a Yankee Square-Rigger
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1988)
Average review score:

A wonderful story of life at seaThis is the best description of the hard life of an American sailor in the 1870s. Harlow, from New England, describes his first coastal voyage on a schooner, down the coast and up the Chesapeake and the Potomac. Then he tells of his long voyage to Australia on a square rigger. The book is fascinating and easy to read even if you don't fully understand all the nautical terms. It is well documented with sea chanteys, pictures and explanatory footnotes.

Manifest Destiny and Mission in American History: A Reinterpretation
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1995)
Average review score:

wonderful book even for people who think history boringI love this book. I first read it as an undergraduate who thought history was boring. This book and my diplomatic history professor completely changed my mind about history almost 20 years ago. The book is very readable and the focus, which tries to look at whether average americans really believed in Manifest Destiny before, during, and after the Mexican-American War, gives the book a social history flavor that one certainly did not see in Diplomatic History back in the early 80's when I first read this book. I highly recommend the book!

Medea (Masters of Latin Literature)
Published in Paperback by Cornell Univ Pr (December, 1986)
Average review score:

Medea is great!!I first heard of Medea in our Latin II class when we covered Greek/Roman mythology. I was really intrigued by her then. This year, in Latin IV we translated a piece of Medea by the Roman author Seneca. I really enjoyed it. I bought Medea at the bookstore and loved it. There is a lot more psychological things going on than you get from the normal myth.
I reccomend this to anyone who likes classical mythology.

Medical Uses of Statistics
Published in Paperback by New England Journal Medicine (January, 1992)
Average review score:

Medical Uses of StatisticsI've been writing an overview of bio-statistics and have been immersed in a stack of statistics books and this one is my favorite, from the perspective of a non-statistician. Chapters are well organized and the material is covered thoroughly without bogging down in formulas. Medical professionals will find this to be an excellent resource for understanding the types of statistical methods used and reported in the well known medical journals.
